Briefing about the Online Dialogue between China and US Scholars
On 10th December, the CPAPD, the US Institute of Peace and the American Friends Service Committee have jointly
held another online dialogue between Chinese and US scholars. More than 20 scholars from the Brookings Institution,
the University of California, the Georgetown University, the Nuclear Deterrence Initiative, the Chinese Academy
of Military Sciences, the China Institute of International Studies, the Tsinghua University and the Fudan University
have participated in this dialogue. All participating scholars have had candid and lively exchanges among themselves
and achieved substantial results, regarding the current global strategic situation and China-US strategic stability.
Scholars have argued that the current global strategic stability has been impacted, the international arms control
and disarmament system has encountered with challenges, and uncertainty has existed in the China-US strategic
relationship. From the strategic and long-term perspective of maintaining global strategic stability and common
interests of mankind, China and the US should aim to build strategic stability between China and the US under
the new situation, through measures of controlling strategic competition, avoiding arms race, enhancing strategic
mutual trust, strengthening strategic dialogue, broadening strategic consensus, and expanding space for strategic cooperation.
Scholars also believed that all peace forces in international organizations, governments, civil society, academia and the media need
to be mobilized. So that these forces can play active roles to vigorously maintain global strategic stability and advocate new arrangements
with contemporary features on basis of the existing arms control system. When the peace forces are mobilized, it will not only provide
new opportunities for governments across the globe to cooperate in promoting international arms control and disarmament, but also new
impetus into the building of a sound and stable China-US relationship
